Henna for Hair

On my new herbal kick and I decided to dye my hair with henna. I usually bleach it blonde and the roots are beginning to show, but the dye is very harsh on my scalp and it usually takes two weeks to get it back to normal after I reapply. I know that hubby likes me with red hair (done it once a loooong time ago), so I decided why not. Anyway, I thought you might like to see the results.

DARK ROOTS

If you're feeling adventurous and want to try this, I got my henna in powder form from bulkherbstore.com.

I mixed about 3/4 cup of powder with enough water to make it the consistancy of mustard and then applied thoroughly. Keep in mind, it will stain the skin, so I applied a thin line of vaseline all the way around my hair line. I wore a bandana around the hairline to catch drips and wiped other drips as they occurred throughout the day. I wore it for 8 hours, but I've heard you can take it off in as little as 3. Rinse well and wash after 24 hours. Be sure and test a small strand of hair especially if you color treat or perm your hair as the results may vary due to chemical reactions with the herb. This herb has no side effects that I'm aware of and it's a natural conditioner as well.

Be blessed.

Got some henna and did my streak test today. It is ORANGE oh boy is it ever ORANGE. I think hubby will like it. He loves it when I change my hair color and with henna I can change it and change it back without damaging my hair, so why not? I'll get hubby to take some pics of before and after. I bleach my hair and sometimes that can cause crazy results, so if you're thinking of trying it and my hair looks the same as yours after bleaching then you might wind up with ORANGE hair when you're done. Maybe I'll have the pics tomorrow.

Be Blessed.

I finally got my MC and was able to order my supplies online. How exciting. It was my first time. I ordered a whole bunch of stuff and got most of it in one day.

I got a bottle capper and some caps to bottle my Kombucha. It was a success. Hubby really likes it and now he drinks it instead of all those nasty energy drinks that you get from the gas station.

I also got a bunch of new herbs and some henna herb for my hair. I'm a bottle blonde and am toying with the idea of going red again, only the natural way. I would have already done it, but haven't been feeling well, so I'm waiting until I feel better.

The kids have been sick so I ordered some Eucalyptus to help with their cough and congestion and man that stuff really works. My throat felt so awful when I got up this morning but I've been inhaling this stuff all day and I might be okay tomorrow. WE'll just have to wait and see. The kids aren't coughing either but I've had them and me on a regimine of GSE and 7up for 4 days. I think that killed it (for them). They are still having some symptoms, but they seem to be getting better. I've also been going through garlic like mad for all of us. This house really stinks. Garlic and Vicks smell -- yum yum.

It was soooooo hot today. It was almost 100 degrees in the house, but by the grace of God, it rained. Not only did it rain, but it poured. Every bit of humidity is gone and we now have our redneck swimming pool back (the mud in the backyard due to all the ongoing construction this summer).

Don't know if I told you before, but because of all the upgrades around town, we got new water mains. We now have real water pressure, which we haven't had since we moved in. Before you couldn't run two faucets at the same time anywhere in the house and now you can run 3. Woowoo. It's very exciting to be able to do laundry in a 1/2 hour in stead of an hour and 1/2.

I'm having a ton of fun at my new job. I think my bosses are great and the job is so much more "useful" than my last job outside the house. I get to share information, research and what little wisdom I've acquired over the years and I'm actually appreciated for it. My last job was a prairie dog farm where beauraucracy and statistics ruled the atmosphere. You weren't allowed to have fun or like anyone. It was so impersonal. I even once got written up for sexual harassment because I was discussing having children with another woman who had just recently married and she wasn't even the one who complained. I never did figure that one out. Anyway, I love my new job and it just keeps getting better and better.

God really is good.

A word on HAIR CARE.

I have been searching for a shampoo to wash my hair that doesn't make my head itch. Soap is the only cleanser that doesn't, but it makes my hair feel limp and dirty, even greasy, so I started doing some research on the more expensive shampoos and the ingredients they put in them. I found a lot of information, but here's the basics.

Once water is added to make a liquid shampoo, it is almost impossible to create an all natural product and still keep the bacteria and mold out. This creates a need for shampoo manufacturers to add chemical preservatives

Commercial shampoos found in grocery store aisles are actually made from various detergents, synthetic materials, processed chemicals and cleansers, and stabilizers that are harsh on your hair and scalp and strip it of it's natural protective oils and moisture. In order to compensate for the way in which they strip natural oils from your scalp, you reach for the bottle of conditioner. These conditioners simply coat the hair weighing it down. When that coating is removed your hair has more body.

Most over the counter shampoos use harsh surfactants or foam
boosters such as ammonium laurel (or laureth) sulfate,
sodium laurel sulfate (SLS). SLS, often called a premium agent
in soaps and shampoos, are used in personal-care products
because they are very cheap. A small amount generates a
large amount of foam, and when salt is added it thickens to
give the illusion of being thick, rich, and expensive. Sodium
laurel sulfates were originally designed to clean floors and can
be found in items like garage floor cleaners, engine degreasers,
and car wash soaps. Sodium laurel sulfate is a strong degreaser
that dries skin and hair, is irritating to the scalp, and may cause
hair loss. It is used in many so-called "natural" cosmetics, but it
is not natural. Other surfactants that may be included:
Cocamidopropyl Betaine, PEG-80 Sorbitan Laurate (also known
as polyethylene glycol), Sodium Trideceth Sulfate,
Lauroamphoglycinate, PEG-150 Distearate, Sodium Laureth-13
Carboxylate, PPG-2 Hydroxyethyl Coco/Isostearamide,
Glycol Monostearate, Cocamide DEA, Octylacrylamide/Acrylates/
Butylaminoethyl Methacrylate Copolymer, Polyglyceryl-3 Distearate,
Polysorbate 60 and many, many more.
Many of these shampoos also use dimethicone, claiming that it
seals in moisture. The only problem is that it is silicone based
and it also seals moisture out. So if using this chemical in
conjunction with the above detergents, your hair and scalp will
be stripped of all esential and natural oils and moisture and then
will be sealed with silicone, virtually making your conditioner
worthless to your hair and scalp.
Commercial shampoos use synthetic fragrances or "nature
identical" oils, preservatives, colorants and other additives that
can irritate your scalp. The "natural" shampoos simply add herbal
extracts to their synthetic shampoos. Commercial shampoos use
scents from fragrance oils that are often heavy and overpowering.
So what is the alternative? Use soap, but soap can leave your
hair feeling limp, heavy, greasy, waxy or dirty.
Shampoo
manufacturers love to spread misinformation claiming that soap
is "harsh." But, the problem with using a natural soap shampoo
is often in the water, not the soap. You need water to shampoo
your hair and hard water makes it harder to wash your hair. Each
hair shaft is made up of little scales, like shingles on a roof. Hard
water tends to make the scales stand up, which makes your hair
feel rough and tangly. Since your hair is tangled and rough, it is
more difficult to rinse out all of the soap. Soap is less effective
in very hard water because its reacts with the excess minerals to
form calcium or magnesium salts. These are not easily soluble in
water and can result in soap film. Washing hair in soft water will
have a different result because it leaves fewer insoluble deposits
on the hair.

If your water is not too hard, just use your all natural soap shampoo and a bit of conditioner. The conditioner will help the scales on your hair lie flat, and allow the last of the soap to rinse out. You might have to experiment with different soaps and conditioners.

If your water is very hard you can use a weak acid rinse, like
vinegar or lemon juice. The acid makes the scales lie down flat,
and again allows the soap to be rinsed more easily. Here is some
information on Natural Vinegar Rinses.
Apple Cider vinegar neutralizes alkali left by shampoos and restores the pH balance. It softens hair. It's a natural fungicide, so it will help to prevent dandruff and many sources claim if used as a regamin, it can help prevent hair loss and actually cause rapid and thicker growth.

UPDATE:
I used commercial shampoo yesterday after not using any for weeks. I started itching almost immediately and itched all day. Today, after I did the research, I bought some vinegar, rewashed my hair with soap, rinsed with vinegar (I used the recipe from the hyperlink above) and water mixed with chamomile tea (for blonde brightening), mint (for itch relief), and lavender (for fragrance and scalp health) and rosemary (for general scalp health). I got almost immediate relief from itching (it usually takes a couple of days for it to stop completely) and my hair feels very soft and it's extremely shiny and bouncy. There is NO LEFTOVER VINEGAR SMELL once the hair is dry!

I think I chickened out on the streaking. I just can't seem to figure out how to do it. I didn't want the brush on or the cap - my hair is just way to long for either of those methods to work. I think I'll just take the dye back to the store and dream of beautiful hair.

I have a prayer request. Our new neighbors are wonderful people (or at least he is). She on the other hand is a very bitter and distraut woman and is going to inevitably destroy her marriage. I would ask that you all pray that the Lord would convict her heart and come to Him and then bring her heart back to her husband. I just keep watching this all happen before my eyes and it makes my heart ache. If she does not answer her convictions, pray the Lord would keep her from taking his children out of the country and therefore out of reach as she is not a US citizen. (They have one and one on the way).

I'll just let you folks know, that I feel very blessed that the Lord convicts my heart daily to bring it back to my husband. My husband is far from perfect, but if he were perfect, what use would he have for me, the mess that I am?

Everyone have a blessed day!

I Hate My Hair

I've had the same plain 80's hairstyle for about (well..hmm...since the 80's) 25 years. It's long, straight with short bangs that I can fluff, or feather, or make "big" hair when the time is right.

These photos are very similar, to kind of give you a general idea. Think long and straight like the blonde (only mine's longer) and layered and puffy on top like the brunette.

My husband likes my hair because it's long, but he wants me to grow my bangs out. My first reaction is "gross". When they grow, they get heavy and flat and I can't style them worth a darn! I've mentioned this to him, but he insists that I look good with all of my hair long. I totally disagree...

My dilema...do I grow them (I've actually already started - and they do nothing but hang in my eyes) or do I stand on my personal rights to have my hair the way I want it, because it's my hair, not his or do I do as he asks and learn ways to fix my hair and learn to tolerate the way I look in the mirror?

Well, my baser instincts will always go with the latter and I can come up with a plethera of reasons to support my side of the arguement. It's easier; I like it better, therefore, I'm happier, therefore I look better to him; my hair is very thick and when my bangs are long, pony tails give me headaches (this is actually true); etc, etc, blah, blah, blah.

My husband has already conceded and told me to do whatever makes me happy, because, that's just the kind of guy he is, but...my goal is to make him happy, so I conclude that the second choice is my only choice and I'm going to give it my best shot. I've actually tried once before, and went back to my first choice and cut my bangs, but I love my husband very much and if he wants my hair long, and I grow it long, then it only serves to benefit us both. The better I look to him, the more he's gonna show it :)

Your husband should be willing to love you no matter what you look like, but if looks were not a factor in relationships at all, then why would a woman ever make herself more attractive to catch a man in the first place? And...if a woman is willing to gussy up to catch a man, why not do it, to keep him and/or keep him happy?

Now I know that many of you are going to poo poo my little rambling, but I thought I would share it anyway, just as an example to the wife who is consistantly complaining about her husband's lack of interest in her, but is unwilling to sacrifice of herself to better please him (namely me).

These have been the ramblings of an imperfect wife in her search for a perfect marriage.

Blessings

P.S. I'll let you know when and if I crumble and cut my bangs anyway...maybe I'll get lucky and my husband will change his mind!
disclaimer:  caution must be taken when reading my blog.  i'm a new creature and the Lord continues to mold and shape me through his will.  older entries may seem to contradict the newer ones.  there's a pretty good chance that they do for two reasons.  first, because of my nature, as i strive for perfection, i will continue to fall short of the mark and should therefore be thankful for his grace and should seek his (and your) forgiveness for having been so foolish in the past.   second, i continue to grow in him; and as changes are made, i have made attempts to change my blog to reflect those changes. in this event, please refer to #1.   if you're interested in perfection, my blog isn't the place to be.  pick up a king james bible (yup, i'm one of THOSE people) and read his PERFECT word.
