new pet

we found a monarch caterpillar today. we decided to keep him and see what comes. my kids went out to fetch some milkweed to feed it and he was not happy. i wasn't really using my common sense because i didn't initially give him the leaf we found him on. i really should have known, cuz it was climbing milkweed, which is actually the variety i grew up with. funny how things get all clustered and covered with dust in your brain and then when you try to pull them out, all the stuff on the shelf falls on your head. anyway, he appears to be a happy bug, but very inactive. i'm thinking maybe he's preparing to shed. he's about 1 inch long and about as big around as a pencil so we're pretty sure he's got some more growing to do.
